The beginning, 1939
Mohiuddin Ahmed, a native of Magura, founded Khoshroz Kitab Mahal in Kolkata in 1939. Soon after, at a literary gathering, he met the poet Golam Mostafa, then a teacher at Hooghly District School. Golam Mostafa named the publishing house "Khoshroz Kitab Mahal" after his own poem titled "Khoshroz."
Pioneer of Bengali law books
In Dhaka, Khoshroz became a pioneer of Bengali-language law books. It started publishing law books in Bengali in 1952, and within a decade it had released the Code of Criminal Procedure, the Penal Code, the Evidence Act, Minor Acts, the Police Handbook and the Code of Civil Procedure in Bengali. Khoshroz also became a leading publisher of police-related books.
A life shaped by faith
His faith shaped his life's work. He was first inspired to publish a Quran translation in 1954. In 1981 a severe illness nearly took his life, and after recovering he performed Hajj. That experience strengthened his commitment to Islamic publishing. He asked Dr. Muhammad Mustafizur Rahman, an Arabic professor at Dhaka University, to translate the Quran, and the full translation was completed after two years of work.
Building Magura Group
From publishing he expanded into industry, founding Magura Paper Mill, Paper Processing and Packaging, Monospool, Jatiya Mudran and NDC Auto Brick, which together grew into Magura Group. Monospool Paper was listed on the stock exchanges in 1989, and Paper Processing and Packaging is also a listed company. Magura Paper Mills was incorporated in 1981 and began commercial operation in 1997. It was the country's first project to produce kraft liner and fluting medium, the papers needed to make corrugated cartons, and it created direct jobs for 500 people.
